My spotlight artist of homespun polymer clay dolls has words of wisdom for us: “The world needs some ugly cute”. I think she’s spot on.
Dr. Seuss’s characters are ugly cute.
They’re ugly. There’s Lorax the complainer, Thing One and Thing Two the mess makers, the Grinch who stole Christmas, and pestering Sam-I-Am. We want to be annoyed with some of their antics. We wonder about any hidden political agendas. But then, we read the story endings. Lessons are taught. Missions accomplished. We say “Awe, they’re cute.” And we go celebrate with Dr Seuss cakes and party hats.
See. How cute is that? H’m.
Each of us is different. That’s perfect! We were beautifully created with a unique stamp of approval from God. It’s just that sometimes, our differences or imperfections make us appear ugly to some while cute to others. I guess that makes us all ugly cute.
I say, test your convictions for their value. Match your will to the One who created you. Then go celebrate!

My spotlight artist of the week is Kim Matheny. She lives with her husband in Pocahontas, Arkansas
Kim is a self taught Fantasy doll artist. She began making dolls in 2010 as an outlet to relieve stress while caring for her ill mother.
The polymer clay dolls are formed over a wire skeleton, and clothed in needle felted wool. Each doll is one of a kind. She says her moods tend to show up on the faces of the dolls.
She opened an Etsy store, and didn’t sell any for several months, but continued sculpting. After she made the first sell, things sped up. Her work has been featured in five doll magazines, and she has sold dolls in Italy, France, Australia, England, New Zealand, Spain, Canada, and the United States. Several collectors follow her art.
Her dolls are often referred to as ugly cute. She doesn’t mind. She says there are so many beautiful dolls, the world needs some ugly cute.
Kim also gardens and has 2 dogs and a cat. She and her husband take care of the ducks and geese on Baltz Lake in Pocahontas. They are currently raising 35 ducklings. Her friends and family, including her 2 sons, are very supportive of her art.
