A cluttered and disorganized living space can leave us feeling stressed and mentally drained. Take small steps to organize your home and it can have profound impacts our overall well-being. The connection between our external environment and our inner self is undeniable. The more stuff we have, the easier it is to let the world overwhelm and dictate our day.
By taking small steps to organize our house, we can experience significant improvements in our mental and emotional state. Let’s explore how these seemingly mundane tasks can lead to transformative changes within ourselves.

Decluttering: A Clear Mind.
Decluttering is not just about removing physical objects but creating space for mental clarity. When you rid your home of unnecessary items, you make room for attentiveness to the things that matter. You free yourself from the weight of material possessions, allowing your mind to feel lighter, more focused, and at peace.
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Philippians 4:8
Start by tackling one area at a time, such as a closet or a drawer.
- Don’t allow yourself to get bogged down with memories. For example, if an item represents a special memory but you no longer have any use for it, snap a picture, write a caption of your special memory, and file it away in your digital or photo album space. Then, you can be content that you honored and preserved the memory but made room for a slice of decluttered space.
- If you are concerned that you may need an item in the future, ask yourself when the last time you or anyone near you needed such an item. If it is seldom needed or easily and reasonably replaceable, permit yourself to let it go to make room for what you need now—less clutter!

Organizing: A Sense of Control
Once you have decluttered, organizing your belongings becomes the next step toward a more organized inner self. Give everything a designated place and establish a system that works for you. You gain control over your life by creating order in your physical surroundings. When you know where things are and can easily find them, you experience reduced anxiety and frustration. The act of organizing provides a wonderful foundation for productivity. You subconsciously organize your thoughts and emotions as you arrange your physical space.
I can attest that if my day in the office is chaotic, I regain control by simply stopping long enough to organize a few stacks and clear a writing space.

Cleaning: A Fresh Start
Maintaining a clean home goes beyond mere aesthetics. It contributes to a healthier and more harmonious living environment, positively impacting your inner being. Regular cleaning not only keeps physical dirt and germs at bay but also helps create a sense of renewal and freshness within yourself. Cleaning can be therapeutic, allowing you to channel your energy into something productive. Wiping away dust can symbolically remove tiny worries and fill the new void with hope. A clean house fosters a sense of pride, contentment, and positivity.
If you find cleaning your space difficult, start with step one—declutter. Then move on to step two—organize. This order will help you tremendously.

Furthermore, these rituals can serve as moments of self-reflection and self-awareness.

The more I organize, the more I appreciate the freedom it brings and the desire to declutter even more and the cleaner my home is, the easier it is to keep a routine.
